Mattermost and archTIS Collaborate to Deliver Secure Collaboration for Defence Operations
Mattermost and archTIS are pleased to announce a collaboration to deliver policy-enforced, data-centric security to secure operational collaboration for Defence Ministries, NATO Allies, and coalition partners worldwide.
The collaboration combines Mattermost’s secure, mission-critical command-and-control surface with archTIS Trusted Data Integration platform, to enable secure collaboration using dynamic policy orchestration via Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC). Together, the joint capability enables dynamic, real-time enforcement of classification policy across Mattermost, Microsoft Office documents, and integrated mission applications from a single operational surface.
As defence organisations operate across increasingly complex coalition environments, the challenge is no longer just secure communication. It is maintaining sovereign control over sensitive information as it is created, shared, accessed, and acted upon. This joint capability is designed to address that challenge directly.
A Sovereign Collaboration Layer with Unified Policy Enforcement
At the core of this collaboration is a sovereign, deployment-agnostic collaboration layer that provides a unified command-and-control surface for operators.
Through this integrated environment, teams can access targeting workflows, intelligence feeds, and partner applications while archTIS Trusted Data Integration acts as the central Policy Decision Point, governing who can access which files across Mattermost-enabled workflows.
This ensures that policy is not applied after the fact, but is embedded directly into the operational environment. Classification rules and access policies can be enforced consistently across collaboration activity, helping teams coordinate effectively while maintaining control over sensitive information.
From Static Permissions to Dynamic, Context-Aware Access
A defining feature of this collaboration is the use of dynamic ABAC policies across the full collaboration surface.
Rather than relying on static, role-based permissions, access decisions are evaluated against the data security policy at every access decision based on attributes, including:
- Classification
- User clearance
- Nationality
- Role and need-to-know
- Device posture
- Environmental attributes
This enables access control to adapt as the operational picture changes, ensuring the right people have access to the right information at the right time.
Extending Security to the Data Itself
Beyond controlling access within channels, this joint capability extends policy enforcement directly to the data layer.
Through archTIS Trusted Data Integration, classification markings, access restrictions, and handling caveats travel with Microsoft Office files and documents, helping ensure policy enforcement extends beyond the Mattermost channel into the document layer where operational decisions are drafted, reviewed, and disseminated.
This shifts security from the perimeter to the data itself, maintaining control from creation through to dissemination.
Built for Coalition Operations and Dynamic Classification
The joint capability is designed to support multinational coalition environments, where classification levels, access requirements, and operational contexts are constantly evolving.
By combining Mattermost’s collaboration and command-and-control surface with archTIS’ policy enforcement capabilities, operators can manage classification dynamically across channels and documents. Access policies can be enforced consistently across participants, files, and connected mission applications, helping ensure sensitive information remains governed as it moves across coalition environments.
This provides a more adaptive and controlled approach to collaboration, aligned with the realities of modern alliance operations.
Demonstrating the Capability in Action
This capability will be demonstrated at AFCEA TechNet Cyber in Baltimore from 2-4 June, AFCEA TechNet International in Belgium from June 9-10, and Eurosatory in Paris from June 15-19 as part of an integrated operational environment, showcasing real-time collaboration secured by dynamic classification management and data-centric policy enforcement across channels, Microsoft Office documents, and integrated mission applications.
The demonstration will provide a practical view of how defence teams can coordinate effectively while maintaining sovereign control over sensitive information throughout its lifecycle.
A Force-Multiplying Collaboration
“Modern defence operations require more than secure communication. They require continuous control over how sensitive data is accessed, shared, and used. Through this collaboration with Mattermost, we’re enabling dynamic policy orchestration, ensuring that classification and access controls are applied at the data level and enforced consistently in real time across complex operational environments.”
— Kurt Mueffelmann, Chief Strategy Officer, archTIS
“In coalition environments, the challenge is not just enabling collaboration, but maintaining control as information moves across teams, systems, and classification boundaries. By working with archTIS, we’re embedding dynamic policy enforcement directly into the collaboration layer, ensuring teams can coordinate effectively while maintaining sovereign control of sensitive information.”
— Jason Blais, VP Product & NATO Alliances, Mattermost
The collaboration between Mattermost and archTIS reflects a broader shift in defence: toward data-centric security models that ensure sensitive information remains controlled, governed, and protected throughout its lifecycle.
By embedding policy enforcement into operational collaboration, Mattermost and archTIS are enabling defence organisations to coordinate, act, and share information securely across coalition environments.
