Mattermost Platform

Webinar: Migrating from Hipchat to Mattermost

For years, high-trust organizations relied on Hipchat for team messaging because—unlike many popular messaging platforms—it could be hosted on-premise or in a private cloud.

In July 2018, however, they found out that Hipchat would be decommissioned this year.

In search of a secure messaging solution to replace Hipchat, many of these companies have migrated to Mattermost, the open source messaging platform designed for DevOps teams.

Over the last several years, work has shifted from email to messaging. As a result, DevOps teams can move faster thanks to real-time collaboration, more automated workflows, and increased transparency.

Despite these advantages, this shift has created three major challenges.

1. Data control

DevOps teams that handle confidential information like environment credentials, infrastructure vulnerabilities, and internal IP need to control where data is stored and how it’s transmitted. Unfortunately, popular vendor-hosted SaaS messaging solutions like Slack and Microsoft Teams can’t provide the level of control IT and security teams require.

2. Extensibility

DevOps teams need platforms that extend beyond messaging so they can accelerate their day-to-day workflows via integrations with tools like Jenkins for pipelines, Jira for issue tracking, Confluence for collaboration, and GitHub or GitLab for Git workflows. Having deep integrations with these systems is critical to working effectively.

3. Scalability

DevOps teams also need messaging platforms that can keep pace with their growth. In multi-tenant environments, software performance can be affected by another organization’s usage, which can result in latency issues or outages. High-performing DevOps teams simply can’t afford to incur any unplanned downtime.

As an open source messaging solution that can be hosted on-premise or in hybrid cloud environments and that can scale to tens of thousands of concurrent users, Mattermost solves all of these challenges.

Mattermost’s single-tenant architecture offers privacy and complete control over data, giving DevOps teams the tools they need to build automated workflows while meeting the requirements of their security teams.
