Extended Support Release lifecycle update: Enhanced upgrade experience for admins

To better align with the needs of our customers, Mattermost is extending the cadence of its Extended Support Releases (ESR) for both the server and desktop app.

These changes aim to provide organizations with more flexibility in planning upgrades while minimizing the frequency and disruptions associated with updates.

What’s Changing

Starting with the August 2025 releases (server v10.11 and desktop app v5.13), Mattermost will adjust the server and desktop app ESR life cycle as follows:

  • Extended Cadence: The ESR release cycle will change from every 6 months to every 9 months.
  • Prolonged Support: The support window will increase from 9 months to 12 months.

Mobile apps will continue to be tested and supported on supported server versions and ESRs as we currently do.

Updated Timeline

The new cadence ensures that security fixes and high severity bug fixes are backported to supported ESRs for a full year, providing admins with peace of mind regarding system stability. The current server v10.5 and desktop app v5.11 ESRs will continue to receive support until November 15, 2025 before transitioning into the updated cycle.

Why ESRs Matter

Extended Support Releases are ideal for organizations that prioritize stability and reduced update frequency. ESRs minimize downtime caused by frequent upgrades, making them a strategic choice for environments where reliable performance is critical.
