Debanshu Kundu wins Mattermost Holiday Hackfest award
Mattermost Holiday Hackfest exceeded expectations with more than 50 contributions from 20 contributors in a month:
The Holiday Hackfest event ran between December 8, 2016 and January 8, 2017 to encourage contributions from developers. We received an overwhelmingly positive response from the open source community – here are a few typical comments:
Mattermost is the most welcoming community I’ve seen so far.
I think the community support is great here, it’s why I keep coming back to contribute.
The dev documentation is very helpful and setup process is very smooth as it handles everything (including DB setup) by itself.
Every time your documentation has information I need. And when I ask something, your team members are kind and their work is quick and wonderful.
Replies in Mattermost are fast and direct, any technical questions will be answered in depth – much appreciated!
Our team is delighted with this response and plans to run a similar event soon!
Those contributors who made at least four pull requests are being contacted for a special Hackathon T-shirt.
If you want to join a growing, vibrant community, check our open Help Wanted issues and come join our public Mattermost Contributors channel for new opportunities.
Highlights
New website link previews, added by debanshuk, which display a preview of website content and replaces the previous link preview feature that handled only a subset of links.
Message edit and delete permissions, added by ayadav, which allows system admins to set custom permissions for editing and deleting messages in deployments with Enterprise E10 and higher (note: thanks to ayadav for both being an enterprise customer and for contributing an enterprise feature originally intended for a future release).
Upgraded install guides, added by JeffSchering, to better support new Mattermost server deployments and make the installation experience smoother. Jeff created a system of “include” options for common tasks like SMTP and NGINX setup to make the system easier to centrally maintain, rather than copying and pasting the same instructions in different install guides. It’s an approach that will have many benefits for the community in future. Thank you Jeff!
Contributions to the Holiday Hackfest also included a direct message link added to profile popover, increased unit test coverage, improvements to slash commands and much more.
Congratulations Debanshu
Overall the contributions were fantastic, with many of them making significant improvements to the software. Based on the impressive response to the new website link previews we are naming Debanshu as the winner of the Mattermost Holiday Hackfest 2016 Award.
We’re already looking forward to the next Hackfest event (which will also feature prizes and a special award for the winner). Interested? Why not join our growing community.
