Mattermost 4.3: Tablet support, E20 data retention. Plus: join us for Hacktoberfest!

Welcome to our October 2017 release announcement.

We have news of a whole bunch of enhancements and improvements to our mobile apps, such as beta support for tablet computers, together with a couple of new compliance features for our Enterprise E20 edition.

We are also delighted to bring you our latest case studies. Find out how FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE is accelerating its digital transformation by switching from Slack to Mattermost, how a major U.S. federal agency migrated to Mattermost to solve its need for secure communication and why Galois selected Mattermost for company-wide collaboration. We’ll be publishing more of these in the coming weeks.

Mattermost 4.3 is now available for download. Since it includes security updates, upgrading is recommended.

Thanks for all community contributions this month and in particular to our 4.3 MVP, Jesús Espino, for his significant contributions to the project including updating developer docs, migrating UI components to Redux, and making the “More unreads” indicator in the channel sidebar clickable.

Team Edition: Tablet Support and Mobile v1.3 Enhancements

Landscape View for Tablets

You can now get a landscape view, better suited for all tablet devices (beta release). Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Link Previews

We have added support for previews of image, GIF and YouTube previews.

Notifications

Android users can now set light, vibrate and sound settings for notifications. Plus, we have improved notification stacking so that the most recent notification shows first. Usability has been improved for all platforms with an updated design for notification settings, and you will find that the app opens faster from a push notification.

Enterprise Edition (E20): Compliance with Data Retention Policy

Data Retention Policy Graphic

Many companies need to meet operational and regulatory compliance requirements on data retention, archiving and deletion; failure to comply could result in fines, loss of business or damage to reputation.

This can now be taken care of in Mattermost. With data retention, companies can set a time period for retaining messages. By default, all messages and files are retained in Mattermost. However, you can now set different policies for files and messages via the system console.

This is currently a beta release. We are interested in feedback, especially from system admins. We want to ensure that Enterprise E20 customers are covered for all operational and regulatory eventualities.

In an upcoming release, we will add compliance exports to third-party archive systems. This means that messages will be copied over to a separate archive before deletion for future audits [legal hold].

Idle Timeout Setting

In addition, we have added an idle timeout setting to config.json. The setting works on the client side and logs people out after not using the system for a specified number of minutes.

We are all human and it is easy to get distracted and forget to log off. This no longer needs to be a problem. Set the new idle timeout in the system console and it will take effect immediately.

New Community Integration:

Spotify-Deezer

Spotify-Deezer Graphic

You can now post links to the millions of digital music tracks available on Spotify and Deezer in Mattermost channels.

How it works: the bot spotify and deezer API searches sound and extracts from the URL the key words [track, album, artist], and the ID. If there is a match, it sends back the URL and posts in Mattermost. You can find more details here.

Thanks to Thomas Brunet (kaylleur) for this fun integration!
