Announcing the Intelligent Mission Environment: Sovereign, AI-Powered Collaborative Workflow for Defense, Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Critical Infrastructure Enterprises

In a world marked by multiple kinetic conflicts and unprecedented geopolitical and regulatory uncertainty, the priorities of defense, intelligence, security, and critical infrastructure organizations have transformed dramatically. The complexity of operational resilience has exploded, as third-party risk now expands past suppliers of physical and digital capabilities to new and fast-changing rules shaped by shifting alliances and evolving national security doctrines. This is unfolding against a backdrop of unprecedented innovation in artificial intelligence, which is reshaping our ability to plan for and anticipate future events. At the nation-state level, leadership in economic, digital, infrastructure, and national security domains is being redefined.

Mattermost has long served some of the world’s most vital organizations, starting as a sovereign, open-source platform for self-hosted secure messaging and evolving into a suite of secure collaboration and workflow capabilities for mission-critical environments.

Yesterday, we announced the Intelligent Mission Environment (IME), an integrated vision to meet the urgent needs of the national security and resiliency community for an integrated, secure, purpose-built platform to deliver focus, adaptability, security, and resilience in the face of fast-evolving global events.

Focus: National Security & Critical Infrastructure

The IME provides sovereign, self-hosted, AI-powered collaborative workflow purpose-built for defense, intelligence, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure enterprises in core use cases:

  • Cyber Defense: Supporting SOC/CERT operations, incident response, out-of-band communications, Red Team & penetration testing, threat hunting, threat intelligence sharing, and other vital workflows requiring data fusion and handling of highly sensitive information.
  • DevSecOps: Enabling the development, securing, and management of digital systems critical to national security and resilience, including fully sovereign CI/CD integration, ITSM, platform engineering, and digital continuity.
  • Mission Operations: Facilitating critical workflows ranging from energy, utility, and manufacturing resiliency to command and control, tactical edge, and joint operations.

Specific industries served include defense, intelligence, cybersecurity, financial services, governmental operations, manufacturing, utilities, operational technologies/industrial control systems, and communications.

Adaptability: Collaborative Workflow, Integration and AI Platform

IME is built to adapt to mission needs with a suite of integrated applications for collaborative workflow, highly configurable user experiences that can be tailored to the environment’s needs using an extensible open source architecture, and an integration platform built for operational extensibility.

Secure Collaborative Workflow applications in the Mattermost suite include:

  • Messaging Collaboration (Mattermost Channels): Secure, persistent messaging, file sharing, and configurable notifications across web, desktop, and mobile clients streamline real-time and asynchronous workflows. This includes communication across public and private channels and direct messages, threaded conversations, mentions, advanced notification configuration (prioritized alerts, keyword triggers, mentions, muting), pinning and bookmarking, search, channel context and access controls, pre-packaged and custom integrations, inbound and outbound webhooks, and rules-based bots.
  • Workflow Automation (Mattermost Playbooks): Automation of standardized workflows to increase operational efficiency and consistency. Mattermost Playbooks enable teams to define and automate repeatable workflows such as incident response, shift change, and mission operations processes. Playbooks consist of checklists, task assignments, notifications, and status tracking, helping to operationalize procedures. They can be integrated with Mattermost Channels to automate actions and update team members in real time. Playbooks improve operational efficiency by reducing manual coordination and ensuring consistent execution.
  • Real-Time Audio and Screen Share (Mattermost Calls): Enable real-time remote exchange of highly sensitive information with fully sovereign real-time audio calling and screen share integrated with mission environments. This includes 1-1 and group audio calling and screen share from channels and direct messages for information sharing and troubleshooting, and enables secure transcription and summarization with 1st-party and 3rd-party AI platforms.
  • Work Management (Mattermost Boards): Issue tracking and Kanban-style task management integrated with channel and messaging workflows for planning and work management. Teams can create, assign, and track tasks using cards on boards that represent workflows or project phases. Boards update in real time, allowing users to monitor progress and prioritize work dynamically. This integration reduces the need to switch between separate project management and communication tools, improving workflow continuity and visibility.
  • AI Agents & Open APIs (Mattermost Agents): Customizable AI-driven automation and assistance within collaboration workflows. Mattermost bots connected to sovereign LLMs, Custom Instructions, and open APIs enable Agents to act as a force multiplier for fusing data and accelerating decision-making while maintaining full data control in on-premises and private cloud deployments.

User Experiences for delivering IME use cases are available across web, desktop, and mobile, as well as within the Microsoft 365 platform, tailored for enterprise and national security requirements:

  • Secure Web Experience: Capabilities available through online and offline web browsers, including operations in air-gapped environments without internet and DNS connectivity.
  • Managed Desktop Experience: We support a customizable desktop application experience for Windows, MacOS, and Linux, including automated endpoint, upgrade/patch management, and configuration.
  • Enterprise-Grade Mobile & MDM Experience: Secure conventional mobile experiences ranging from enterprise-grade pre-packaged iOS and Android mobile applications from Apple AppStore and Google Play to fully enterprise-controlled MDM-wrapped Mattermost mobile application architecture with Zero Trust ID-only push notifications.
  • Security Optimized Non-MDM BYOD Mobile Experience: Secure mobility for complex environments requiring communication on BYOD devices without MDM, with advanced application-level security including self-managed Mattermost applications with SSL-pinning/secure tunneling, jailbreak/root detection and mitigation, attribute-based and biometric authentication compliance, encrypted storage, and other advanced controls to optimize security posture.
  • Integrated Microsoft Teams, Outlook & M365 Experience: Enterprises using third-party managed Microsoft environments can integrate self-hosted, first-party controlled Mattermost deployments as an embedded application in MS Teams, Outlook, and M365 with integrated authentication and notifications.

Extensible Open-Source Architecture for these applications and the underlying Mattermost infrastructure built on Go, React, React Native, PostgreSQL, and webhooks enables experiences and capabilities to be configured, customized, extended, and white-labeled based on customer needs.
