Introducing Mattermost Entry: A Smarter Starting Point for Secure Collaboration

For years, organizations have used Mattermost Team Edition as a starting point into our platform. While Team Edition helped many teams get up and running quickly, it has also been used in oversized, unsupported deployments that outgrew its original intent.

In many cases, those deployments weren’t set up with the guardrails or upgrade path needed for long-term success. As a result, teams often didn’t have a clear way to evaluate the capabilities and support that come with our subscription offerings.

It’s time to change that.

Why We Built Entry

Team Edition has served an important role, but it wasn’t designed to be the default on-ramp for every organization especially as deployments grow and requirements become more complex.

In practice, we’ve seen:

  • Oversized, unsupported environments that outgrew their original purpose
  • Limited evaluation paths into subscription capabilities and support
  • Gaps in governance and scalability that mission-critical teams rely on

To ensure every new deployment starts off with the right foundation, we’re evolving our free offerings. Mattermost Entry is our new default starting point designed to help teams experience the breadth of the platform early, with clear guardrails and a seamless path to upgrade when they’re ready.

Team Edition remains available with defined limits to help prevent oversized, unsupported deployments. The Mattermost open source project remains available under AGPLv3, and Team Edition is the MIT-Compiled distribution from Mattermost, Inc.

From Mattermost v11, Team Edition no longer includes GitLab SSO.

Meet Mattermost Entry

Mattermost Entry is the new default free edition for small teams (25–50 users) and for evaluating our subscription offerings. Entry is free to use under a commercial license. It provides the Intelligent Mission Environment (IME) feature set including Playbooks, Boards, Calls, AI Agents, and Enterprise Advanced capabilities with hard usage rate limits designed to encourage healthy adoption and a clear upgrade path.

The result is a free, feature-rich Mattermost experience from day one — secure, extensible, and ready for mission-critical workflows — while still supporting a natural path to upgrade as requirements grow.

What’s Included in Mattermost Entry

Entry gives you access to the IME experience, with hard usage rate limits and a clear upgrade path. Purpose-built for mission-critical operations, Mattermost IME delivers a unified platform for secure, extensible, AI-powered collaboration and automation, deployable across the most demanding environments.

The Intelligent Mission Environment integrates secure messaging, workflow automation, task management, agentic AI, and real-time communication within a sovereign, cyber-resilient architecture. It supports extensibility through open APIs and integrations, and runs flexibly across on-premises, cloud, and air-gapped systems enabling operational focus, adaptability, and resilience from edge nodes to centralized data centers.

IME includes:

  • Enterprise-grade messaging and collaboration — Channels offers 1:1 and group messaging, file sharing, threaded discussions, and more.
  • Workflow automation — Mattermost Playbooks standardizes and automates mission workflows such as incident response, shift changeovers, and operational checklists, reducing human error and improving procedural consistency.
  • Project and task management — Mattermost Boards enables teams to coordinate operational work with Kanban-style planning that integrates directly into messaging workflows, enabling transparency, prioritization, and accountability across teams.
  • AI-accelerated collaboration tools — Interactive bots, summarization, and contextual intelligence.
  • Core security and governance capabilities — Audit logs and granular access controls (with select scale/compliance features reserved for paid tiers).
Custom branding, multilingual support, and integrations to align Mattermost with your workflows.

Where Mattermost Entry Differs

To encourage healthy adoption, Entry introduces hard limits on usage. Current planned limits include:

  • Message history capped at 10,000 messages
  • 10,000 push notifications per month
  • 1,000 board cards
  • 5 playbook runs per month
  • 1:1 audio calls limited to 40 minutes
  • AI-assisted agent queries capped at 250 per month

These guardrails are designed to give teams time to prove the value of Mattermost without creating long-term unsupported deployments while keeping a clear upgrade path open. For the latest limits and edition details, see Mattermost Plans & Editions.

A Smarter Way to Start

Mattermost Entry ensures every organization gets a clear, intentional starting point that reflects the breadth of our platform’s capabilities while setting the right guardrails for healthy adoption.

Whether you’re a defense team needing secure collaboration in air-gapped environments or a critical infrastructure provider looking for AI-accelerated operations, Entry is designed to help your early deployment experience reflect the value of Mattermost’s subscription capabilities with a seamless path to upgrade when you’re ready to expand.
