Mattermost 2.2: Threaded messages, themes and more

Threaded messaging, themes to share, new international forums and documentation, French translation, production Docker image becomes official, updated Desktop apps, a Vagrant based packager, plus new and improved integrations with Trello, IRC, GitHub, PandoraFMS, and ContainerShip.

Huge thanks to the people around the world who contributed to this incredible release.

Mattermost 2.2.0 is now available for download. This release contains security updates and it is highly recommended that users upgrade to this version.

USA: Threaded messages

Slack’s new threaded messaging feature sounds similar to Mattermost’s “Reply” feature from 2015.

THREADED MESSAGES: The above screen clips shows the “Bugs” channel of a Mattermost team. The message from corey at the top of the channel saying “Let’s hold off for now” references a threaded message. The thread has 13 comments, which have been added over a number of days, and clicking the Reply icon brings up the thread in the right sidebar, where conversation can continue.

While “Reply” was first developed by the Mattermost community, in Mattermost v2.2 we’re renaming it to “threaded messages” so that after Slack adds the feature, users coming over to Mattermost will find the experience familiar.

We don’t know how much our work influenced Slack’s decision, but we’re happy that users of both systems benefit from the feature.

Canada: Theme Contributions

In Mattermost v2.2 we’re creating new ways for the community to share theme color designs with each other. A contest is now on to design themes for inclusion in future release of Mattermost. From inside the Custom Theme menu in Mattermost v2.2 users can now import theme color designs from any other user.

Go to Account Settings > Display > Themes > Custom Theme > Copy and paste to share theme colors to try out this feature.

China & Japan: CJK Search

Since the introduction of localization support in Mattermost 2.0 the international community has grown rapidly. This month:

  • A new international section was added to Mattermost forums with new sections for Spanish, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
  • Nine new languages, in addition to the four in Mattermost v2.2, are under development on the Mattermost translation server. These include Chinese, Czech, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Russian.
  • New documentation was added for language-specific installation, including procedures to configure CJK search.

Search in Chinese, Korean and Japanese languages (also known as “CJK”) require specialized database configuration because, unlike English and many other non-CJK languages, spaces are not used to separate words.

Many thanks to schemacs for adding Chinese documentation and terukizmyukihane and kou for help with Japanese documentation.

France: French Translation

With the addition of French translation, Mattermost is better than ever before for 274 million French speakers in the world. Huge thanks to pjgrizeltbolon and jblobel for leading this effort.

Korea: Official Production Docker

Last year npcode created mattermost-docker as Mattermost Docker image designed for production environments. We’re happy to share that the work is becoming an official Mattermost project, with npcode‘s help to maintain this wonderful work.

Over time, we hope that mattermost-docker replaces the preview-only Docker image created by the core team with a variation of mattermost-docker that can upgrade from preview to production.

Japan: Upgraded Desktop Apps

A new release of Mattermost Desktop apps, now at version 1.1.1 is available with bug fixes. Many thanks to yuya-oc for continuing to maintain and upgrade the apps.

World: Trello, Packager, Matterbridge Plus, GitHub, ContainerShip, PandoraFMS

We greatly appreciate all the community applications being developed. We haven’t had time to list them all here by the release of 2.2, but we’ll add more retroactively. If you’ve created a Mattermost application or installer, please let us know about it so we can share it with the community.
