Mattermost 4.5: Zoom plugin for video, audio and screen sharing, plus new mobile features

Our December 2017 update just shipped and we can’t wait for you to see what’s inside.

We hope Mattermost 4.5 will make your job even easier thanks to some major updates we’re excited to share with you:

  • Zoom Plugin for Video, Audio and Screen Sharing: Our new Zoom plugin enables you to make voice and video calls and screen share directly within the Mattermost interface.
  • Easier Compliance: This beta feature allows you to export data to a third-party system (Actiance) for archiving purposes, out of the box.
  • Faster, Richer Mobile App: Several awesome new features were added to our mobile app, giving you the tools you need to get even more done when you’re on the go.

You can download Mattermost 4.5 to try out these new features. Since it includes security updates, upgrading is recommended.

Thanks also for all community contributions this month and in particular to our 4.5 MVP, Ryan Wang, for adding +sign next to emoji reactions and for his 34 contributions to Mattermost so far.

Last but not least, thanks to our community for building and contributing three new integrations to Mattermost!

Mattermost 4.5 will increase productivity and make your organization even more efficient. Here’s what you can expect to see when you download it:

Zoom Plugin

You no longer have to leave the Mattermost interface to launch a voice or video call.

Thanks to our new Zoom integration—which uses our new plugin framework—Mattermost users can launch and join voice and video meetings in just a few clicks via the channel header.

As always, the Zoom plugin is open sourced. This means our customers and our community have the ability to customize the plugin to their exact specifications as well as extend it to other video conferencing platforms, such as Skype and Hangouts.

Automated Actiance Compliance Export (Beta, Enterprise Edition E20 Governance Add-on)

Many organizations need to archive their data for various purposes. For example, a company might have an internal policy that says they need to delete messages older than three months from Mattermost. But they’ll still need access to those older messages for e-discovery purposes in the event a lawsuit is filed against them.

Good news: To meet that requirement, customers can now automatically export data to a third-party system (Actiance) to archive those older messages indefinitely. (Support for other systems, including Global Relay, are on the roadmap.) As a result, customers can meet compliance requirements while being able to store data for as long as needed without having to manually export their data.

This feature, which works together with the data retention feature released in Mattermost 4.3, is currently a beta release. It was designed to ensure our Enterprise E20 customers have their operational and regulatory needs covered.

Mobile Updates

Our freshly updated mobile app has even more features designed to increase your productivity, including support for:

  • More file previews. Easily view videos, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents and PowerPoint slideshows.
  • Slash commands. Now you can use custom slash commands on your mobile device, along with a selection of built-in commands similar to the desktop app.
  • Quickly view channel contents. In iOS, press on a channel name with 3D touch to peek at its content and quickly mark as read.
  • Markdown imagines. Inline markdown images in posts now render instead of showing the URL link.
  • iPhone X. The updated interface supports the iPhone X.

We’ve also added a new setting in the server for app upgrading. Admins can now set the minimum server allowed in the app, which will also show what the current version is. The app will let users know about updates (both optional and mandatory) and provides links to upgrade.

API Version 3 Deprecated Jan. 16, 2018

In July 2017, we unveiled API version 4. We also announced that we’d be removing API version 3 in January 2018.

That date is rapidly approaching. For tips on migrating from APIv3 to APIv4, check this out.

Three New Open Source Projects

We’re pleased to highlight three new community integrations that appeared since our last update.

1. Giphy Integration on AWS Lambda

You can now bring the fun and utility of Giphy gifs directly into the Mattermost interface with this simple serverless AWS Lambda function. Just create a slash command (e.g., “/giphy”) to post keyword-related gifs from Giphy directly into a Mattermost channel or private chat.

For more information, check out the GitHub repository. Thanks to Pablo Schläpfer for this awesome contribution!

2. MantisBT Plugin Integration

MantisBT is an open source issue tracker. This integration enables you to automatically send bug updates to Mattermost channels through MantisBT 2.0x (note: it’s not backwards compatible).

Here’s the GitHub repository if you want to learn more about this integration. Thank you Aamir Mahmood for your brilliant work!

3. Laravel Web Framework for Mattermost PHP driver

This project includes a Laravel integration for the php-mattermost-driver package.

Here is the Github repository for more information about this integration. Thanks to Luca Agnello for this contribution!
